IP-COS UMY Students Have Public Lecturing with Malaysian Lecturer

The first week of offline learning in International Program of Communication Studies (IP-COS), Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta was opened by public lecturing agenda with a lecturer from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia on Thursday (22/9). IP-COS invited Dr. Muhammad Raqib Bin Mohd Sofian to give a public lecture conducted in Assembly Room, AR. Fachruddin A, UMY The theme of the public lecturing was “Malaysia – Indonesia “Love & Hate” Relationships and The Media: The Past, Present, and The Future”.

In front of 70 students of IP-COS, Raqib explained the media roles in relationship stability between Indonesia and Malaysia. “Whatever kind of the media, either it is newspaper, television, or online media, all have important roles in the shape of public opinion towards domestic and international issues,” said Raqib. He also added that the stability between Indonesia and Malaysia is influenced by the media report. He thinks that media can influence Indonesian and Malaysian perceptions towards each other, whether it is good or bad, it depends on the media reports content in each country.

Meanwhile, the IP-COS students were following the discussion session in public lecturing enthusiastically. Raqib closed the session by inviting the students to do many research and journal writing about media roles in Indonesia and Malaysia. “College students must be smart to sort source of news and media, so they will not be a ‘clickbait’ victim and make the relationships between Indonesia and Malaysia worse,” he said before closing the public lecturing session.
